Privacy Policy

ReadLater is a personal knowledge capture tool. This policy explains what data the extension collects, how it is used, and how it is stored.

What data we collect

• Account credentials — your email address and a bcrypt-hashed password, used solely to authenticate you with your self-hosted or personal ReadLater backend.
• Article content — the URL, title, author, excerpt, and full text of pages you explicitly choose to save by clicking "Save Article". Nothing is captured automatically or in the background.
• Tags — labels you optionally add to saved articles.

What we do not collect

• Browsing history or pages you visit without saving
• Any data from pages you do not explicitly save
• Analytics, telemetry, or crash reports
• Advertising identifiers or tracking cookies
• Personal information beyond what you provide during registration

How data is stored

All data is stored in your own backend (self-hosted or deployed by you on a service such as Render). The extension itself stores only a short-lived authentication token in chrome.storage.session (cleared when the browser closes) and your API server URL in chrome.storage.local.

No data is sent to any third-party service. The only network requests made by the extension are to the API server URL you configure.

Data sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party. Your saved articles and account information never leave the backend you control.

Data deletion

You can delete individual articles at any time from the extension. To delete your account and all associated data, remove the database from your backend server.

Permissions

The extension requests the following browser permissions:

• activeTab — to read the URL and title of the current tab when you click Save.
• scripting — to run the Readability content extractor on the current page when you click Save.
• storage — to persist your auth token and settings locally.
• contextMenus — to add a right-click "Save to ReadLater" option.
• alarms — to retry any saves that failed due to a network error.
• <all_urls> — required so the content extractor can run on any page you choose to save.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, the "Last updated" date above will be revised. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
